This guide is written by Koimo. It explains where our product fits and links to other tools’ own descriptions. It is not an independent ranking or a claim that one app has the best model, memory or price.
Choose Koimo if you enjoy a character-led story: slow-burn romance, a fantasy mystery, an all-night city adventure or a quiet conversation in a record shop. Your private library holds your versions of the characters; exports let you keep your writing in open formats.
There are boundaries to that fit. Koimo is 18+ and explicit scenes fade to black. AI replies can be inconsistent, and memory tools do not guarantee perfect recall. Imported files do not recreate another service’s model or reveal hidden character definitions. Koimo is independent and is not affiliated with Character.AI.

“Sites like Character.AI” can mean very different things. A hosted character-chat app, a companion service and a text-adventure game are different experiences. Start with the kind of interaction you want, then check the current limits, age rules and privacy information on the service itself.

When trying any alternative, use the same short scene. Ask a plain question, disagree once, introduce a small fact and refer back to it later. Notice whether the character keeps its voice, leaves your choices to you and uses the detail accurately. Your own scene is a better fit test than a generic “best AI” list.
Bring the characters. Keep the originals.
- Get your files first. Our Character.AI backup guide explains CAI Tools downloads and the separate official data-export request.
- Keep character and chat files together. A card describes the character. A transcript contains the conversation. One does not replace the other, and another creator’s hidden definition may not be included.
- Preview and convert locally. The free import tool processes supported files in your browser. Download a backup in an open format before deciding what to save to an account.
- Choose what to bring into your private library. Saving to a Koimo account is a separate step from local conversion. Review the imported details and start from a supported character.
Supported conversion includes Character Card V2/V3 and supported SillyTavern/CAI Tools chat formats. Official Character.AI account-export parsing is not supported yet. Unknown files can be inspected without pretending they have been converted. Keep the untouched original download.
A migrated character may sound different because each app uses its own model, prompt and context. Review the definition and establish your current scene with a short recap. Our continuity guide can help.

Is there a free Character.AI alternative?
Koimo offers 50 free chat messages a day. Its local backup and conversion tool is free without an account. Check the app for current chat availability and limits; free does not mean unlimited.
Can I chat with anime-style characters?
Koimo’s original cast includes anime-inspired city stories, fantasy romance, sci-fi and mystery. These are original fictional adult characters, with introductions you can read before starting.
Will my imported character remember our old chats?
A character card alone contains no conversation history. A supported imported chat can provide history for rebuilding continuity, but recall depends on processing, summaries and the context available to the model. Do not assume every old message will be remembered verbatim.
Is Koimo an unfiltered or no-filter alternative?
No. Koimo has a content policy, is for adults 18+ and fades explicit scenes to black. Choose it for character-driven stories within those boundaries.
Does Koimo connect to my Character.AI account?
No. The local tool reads files you choose. It does not sign in to Character.AI. Uploading supported content to your private Koimo library is a separate choice.
