Free downloads. No membership needed.
CAI Tools is a third-party browser extension with free character and chat downloads. Use the Download menus in its Chatbot tab; no membership is needed for these files. It is made by an independent developer, not by Character.AI or by Koimo.
Install CAI Tools on a computer
Get it for Chrome (and Edge, Brave) or Firefox. On a phone, the Character.AI app can't run extensions; use a computer if you can.
Open character.ai in that browser and sign in
Open the chat you want to keep, open CAI Tools, then select its Chatbot tab.
Download the chat and the character
Under Character, open Download and choose a PNG or JSON character card. Under Chat, open its separate Download menu and choose the Tavern / SillyTavern JSONL format. Download both: the card holds the character, and the chat holds your conversation.
These downloads are free. You do not need a membership or a Nomads library save. Repeat for every chat you care about. Characters made by other people may download without their hidden definition; that's normal.
Drop the files into Koimo
Open the Koimo import tool and drop the files (or a zip of them). You'll see what was saved, then download everything as standard character cards and chat files that open in SillyTavern and other apps. Your files never leave your device.
Option 2: Request Character.AI's official data export
Slow, but do it anyway.
Character.AI can email you a full copy of your account data. Request it now, even if you also used CAI Tools, so you have a second copy.
The official export reportedly takes 3–4 weeks to arrive, and the download link expires 7 days after the email is sent. Download it the same day the email arrives.
Open your profile settings
On the website: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data. In the mobile app: Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy.
Choose “Export data”
Select Export Data. The website shows a confirmation pop-up; the app shows a success banner. If the menus change, check their help article.
Watch your email
The link goes to the email address on your account. Check spam. When it arrives, download the file right away and keep it somewhere safe.
Bring it to Koimo
Support for the official export file is coming as soon as we can test it against a real one. Until then, the import tool will show a content-free outline of its structure in your browser, and you can keep the file safe.
Common questions
Does Koimo log in to my Character.AI account?
No. We never connect to Character.AI. We only read files you choose, inside your browser.
Is Koimo part of Character.AI?
No. Koimo is independent and not affiliated with Character.AI or Disney. We mention Character.AI only to explain file compatibility.
Where can I chat with my characters after?
The converted cards work in SillyTavern and other apps that support Character Card V2/V3. Koimo chat is available with an account. Bring a supported character card into your private library to start a new chat.
