AI roleplay memory: keep the story consistent

Understand context, summaries and pinned memories in AI character chat. Learn what to save, how to correct continuity and why no chatbot remembers everything.

What does AI character memory mean?

AI roleplay memory is the information a chat system carries into the next reply. It can include recent messages, a character definition, a summary of older events and details you have pinned. The model does not automatically reread an unlimited history before every answer.

When a character forgets a promise, it may be missing from the current context or have been compressed badly. When it invents a shared event, it may be filling in a plausible story rather than retrieving a fact. These are different failures, and both can happen even when an app offers memory tools.

In Koimo, story summaries and pinned details help carry continuity. Treat them as editing tools you can inspect and correct. Characters can still lose track; if a detail matters to the next scene, check that the note describes it accurately.

Four layers worth understanding

  • Character definition: stable identity, voice, relationships and setting. It should not become a diary of every scene.
  • Recent context: the messages used to write the next answer. Capacity is finite; old messages may leave this window.
  • Story summary: a compact account of earlier events. It saves space but can omit nuance or preserve an error.
  • Pinned details: a small set of facts you explicitly want retained. Clear, current pins are easier to use than an unedited transcript.

Some systems also retrieve stored facts relevant to the current message. Retrieval still has to find the right fact, resolve contradictions and present it to the model correctly. A feature named “long-term memory” is not evidence that those steps always work.

Write a continuity note the model can use

Save what changes future choices: a promise, a relationship boundary, a discovered clue or the current location. Prefer direct sentences with names over vague pronouns. Avoid pinning a long exchange when one sentence contains the fact you need.

Current scene: Ren and I are closing the B-side during a rainstorm.
Relationship: We are new friends. Neither has confessed romantic feelings.
Established fact: I prefer jazz records to live recordings.
Promise: Ren agreed to show me the "for the right person" box tomorrow.
Open thread: We have not opened Mrs. Okabe's letter.
Boundary: Leave my character's dialogue and decisions to me.

Separate established events from plans. “We will investigate tomorrow” is not the same as “we investigated and found the answer.” If a scene changes, update the current-location note instead of keeping two incompatible versions.

Keep hidden twists out of a note that should guide only present knowledge. If the model sees the answer, it may reveal it early. You can describe an unresolved thread without deciding its explanation.

Repair a contradiction without restarting

  1. Correct the immediate reply: “Small continuity correction: we haven’t opened the letter yet. We’re still in the shop.”
  2. Check the summary and pins: remove the older or mistaken version if it appears there.
  3. Return to one action: describe what you do next in the corrected scene.
  4. Watch the next few replies: if the error persists, check the character sheet for a conflicting assumption.

Editing or regenerating a reply can help with a single mistake, but repeated regenerations will not reliably repair incorrect source information. Fix the detail the model is being given.

Before a big branch or a long break, export your chat and keep a short recap. A downloaded transcript preserves your writing; importing it elsewhere does not guarantee identical memory or personality. See the Character.AI backup guide for supported migration paths.

For a fresh scene, try our roleplay starters. For an inconsistent personality, work on the character definition rather than adding more story memories.

Keep writing.
